Scientific background
David Krýsl was born in Prague. During his studies at the Third Faculty of Medicine of Charles University he was drawn to basic research in the field of pathological physiology, specifically investigation of the consequences of epileptic seizures and mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic CNS injury. In his work, he utilized various experimental models, including cortical photothrombotic lesions and flurothyl seizures. During his pregraduate studies, he published his first impacted paper in the journal Epilepsia.
After receiving his M.D. degree in 2003, he continued his research activities as a Ph.D. student of Pathological Physiology and at the same time became a resident at the Department of Neurology, Second Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Motol University Hospital. In 2009, he completed his specialized training in Neurology and in 2013 he defended his Ph.D. thesis titled Functional consequences of epileptic seizures and hypoxic/ischemic injury of the CNS. Clinically, he focused on epileptology, epilepsy surgery, but also neuroimmunology. In 2010, he initiated and developed the diagnostic programme for patients with autoimmune encephalitis at Motol University Hospital.
In 2013, he moved to Gothenburg, Sweden, and 2013-2020 he worked at Sahlgrenska University Hospital as an epileptologist, clinical neurophysiologist and clinical researcher. In 2020, he moved back to Prague with his family to rejoin his home clinic. He is currently responsible for EEG/video-EEG laboratory and serves as the Deputy Head of the Department for teaching. Since 2023, he has been the Secretary General of the Czech League Against Epilepsy. As an electroencephalographist and epileptologist, he has been involved in a number of research projects and scientific activites of EpiReC.
